The Mechanical Seal was originally called a 'Cook Seal' and was invented by George Cook. He founded the Cook Seal Company. Cook's seal (which originally had no means of drive) was first used in refrigeration compressors.
In 1990 the world market for Mechanical Seals was estimated at $1 billion and it continues to grow year or year. You will find a mechanical seal in products like power showers and washing machines, to pumps in large chemical plants and oil refineries.
Cook sold the company to Muskegon Piston Ring Company where it was renamed as The Rotary Seal Division of Muskegon Piston Ring Co. Muskegon Piston Ring then sold the Rotary Division to Sealol which in turn was acquired by John Crane.
